My name is Tendai Machingaidze. I was born in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1982. I completed my undergraduate studies in Biochemistry at Syracuse University in New York, masters studies in Theology and Education at Southwestern Seminary in Texas, and currently I live in Russia where I am studying Medicine.
How I Became a Writer
I was fortunate to be raised by parents who took me to the library on the weekends and instilled in me a love for the written word. That love for reading Nancy Drew case files gave birth to a desire inside of me which grew steadily over the years until one day I picked up a pen and started writing.
My Most Recent Book
My debut novel is titled Acacia (African Perspectives Publishing, 2014). Acacia is the story of a flawed heroine torn between the enduring innocence of her first love, and the two agonizingly different men who define the woman she becomes. With her heritage rooted in Africa, yet born in America, Acacia is the daughter of two worlds whose kaleidoscopic life is a triumph of hope over tragedy.
“Acacia trees flourish when the rains are abundant. And when there is a drought, they persevere.”
This is Acacia!
Acacia is available in print and e-book formats from African Books Collective, Amazon.com, eBay.com, and Kalahari.com.
My Other Writings
In addition to completing my first novel, I have also published several short stories – The Red Vienna is Back (Weaver Press Zimbabwe), Super Granny (Africa Book Club), Lunar Rainbows (The Kalahari Review), and coming soon A Salute to Safety Sam (African Roar).
My Favorite Writer
From Elizabeth Bennett to Jason Bourne, I enjoy reading a broad spectrum of characters, so it is impossible for me to pick a single favorite writer.
My favorite books by an African author are The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith. In the character of Mma Ramotswe, McCall Smith ingeniously celebrates Africa and her people, making me look forward to each new adventure.
In My Spare Time
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, traveling, movies, sleeping, and reading some more.
Something Interesting About Me
