A new book by Nelson Mandela was this month launched in Johannesburg, South Africa. The book titled, Nelson Mandela By Himself: The Authorized Book of Quotations is a collection of quotes drawn from Mandela’s speeches, notebook entries, recorded conversations and other materials.
Notes from the Nelson Mandela Foundation describe Nelson Mandela By Himself as “the definitive book of quotations from one of the great leaders of our time.” It features more than 2,000 quotations spanning over 60 years, many previously unpublished. The quotations are organized into over 300 categories for easy reference. Included, of course, are the final words from the famous speech Mandela made at the Rivonia Trial in 1964:
“During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”
The book, edited by Sello Hatang and Sahm Venter who both work for the Nelson Mandela Foundation, is currently available in South Africa, the UK, New Zealand and Australist. The hardcopy version is expected to be available in the US in October 2011.
