“House Boy” was originally published in French in 1956 under the title “Un vie de boy”, and later translated to English in 1966.
The book is written in form of a diary, kept by a Cameroonian houseboy Toundi.

The book, originally written in French by Camara Laye under the title “l’enfant noir” in 1954 (the dark child), was translated by James Kirkup. In ‘The African Child’, Laye describes life, growing up as an African child in Guinea, West Africa.
