Manu Herbstein needs little or no introduction to fans of African writing. Born in 1936, Herbstein worked as a civil and structural engineer in the 1960s in England, Nigeria, Ghana, India, Ghana again, Zambia and Scotland. He returned to Ghana in 1970 and has lived there since.
The writer, who holds dual South African and Ghanaian citizenship, is the author of Ama: A Story of the Atlantic Slave Trade (2001), which won the 2002 Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Book, the first time the award had been given to an electronic book.
